Curious about EMDR?

If you're a therapist curious about EMDR training but not quite sure where to start, you're in the right place.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured psychological therapy that helps people process trauma and other distressing experiences. It’s one of the most well-researched trauma treatments available and supports clients to move beyond stuck patterns and long-standing emotional distress.

Many therapists are drawn to EMDR because it offers a different way of working — but it can be hard to know if it’s the right fit or what the training involves. This page is here to help with those early questions.

This 3 minute animation provides a helpful explanation of EMDR therapy.

Who can train in EMDR therapy?

EMDR therapy is an advanced psychological treatment, and a mental health background is essential for learning and applying it safely and effectively.

Training is open to a range of professionals — including psychologists, social workers, counsellors, mental health nurses and occupational therapists — who meet the eligibility criteria set by the EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA).

What does EMDR training involve?

My EMDR Basic Training Program is accredited by the EMDR Association of Australia. It takes place across six days of live training — divided into two 3-day workshops (Parts 1 and 2) — and includes 10 hours of post-training online group consultation.

After completing Part 1, you’ll be equipped to begin using EMDR therapy with suitable clients right away. Part 2 then builds on your foundational skills, offering more advanced strategies and support for working with complex presentations. The online group consultation sessions provide guidance to help embed your learning into clinical practice.

There’s flexibility around how you space out the components, but all parts must be completed within a two-year period. You can choose to register for each workshop separately, or opt for the all-inclusive training package, which offers a great financial saving.

I aim to create a learning environment that’s inclusive, practical, and down-to-earth. My approach is neurodiverse-affirming and strengths-based, with space to ask questions, experiment and grow confidence. The workshops are interactive and skill-focused — with live demonstrations, supervised practice, and space to connect with others..
